Kunstmuseum Thun
The former Grand Hotel Thunerhof lies directly on the Aare, with a view of the mountains around Thun. The historic walls of the first luxury hotel in the city have housed the City Art Collection since 1949. Over the years, significant minor masters, Swiss classical modern art, a large group of Swiss Pop Art works and works of promising artists from the region have been collected, and have been complemented by contemporary art from Switzerland.
In five to six large temporary exhibitions a year at the Kunstmuseum Thun, the public not only comes into contact with the treasures of the collections, but, above all, with contemporary positions that are linked to the collection at some point or that provide it with new impulses. The Kunstmuseum Thun pursues the aim of bringing an interested public closer to art in both an intelligent and enjoyable manner, and of creating areas of friction.
The exhibition programme is aimed at a wide public and emphasises the perception of the museums as an open house and as place of confrontation. Guided tours and workshops are offered for children and young people, projects in collaboration with artists and support of teachers. With the project room “enter", the museum offers young artists the opportunity to present many promising approaches through a first museum appearance.
