Berntorscheune

The Berntorscheune is located in the centre of the city, on the Berntorgasse. It was built for Venner Jakob Rubin by the carpenter Hans Eimann in 1655. Today, it is an important document of the master carpentry at that time, and is the last example of an agricultural building within the city walls.

The Berntorscheune is a voluminous, low-cost building in mixed construction. Noteworthy features of this two-storey building are the wood-clad gable with arbour and the mighty hipped roof projecting over the street space.

The powerful, half-timbered structure with its diagonal struts and the characteristic triangular ventilation holes in the filler is also impressive.
